To make sure the incident was singular to one individual I googled the name of the current chief, and three former police chiefs, with the AND operator connecting the names with the word carjack. Only one name returned, and there were many returns. In that I was not there when the alleged incident occurred, I will disclaim up front that the words alleged, alleges, and allegedly are assumed when necessary throughout this article.

The incident in question is a report that James Craig, Detroit Police Chief, while in a community meeting about carjacking related his own recent experience with a carjacker. Specifically, according to the Detroit Daily News, Craig said. “And one suspect jumped out and began running toward the passenger side of my vehicle” Craig then stated “As soon as I saw the suspect running to my car, I accelerated out of harm’s way.” I guess “accelerated out of harms way” which is, I guess, Craig-speak for “ran away like a scared school girl”. Thee was no indication of any follow-up, such notifying Detroit dispatch of the incident, or returning to the scene to investigate further, and anything else you would expect of a police officer who has witnessed or been a victim of a crime. Did I say expect? I think it is his sworn duty to do so. That of course, if he is a sworn police officer in the City of Detroit, a status he never achieved while working in Cincinnati.

Related to this, thee is an email thread that either was originated by, or relayed by former (once removed) police chief Tom Streicher. This email is quoted below:

“On Oct 23, 2013, at 3:21 PM, “Thomas Streicher” <tomstreicher@xxxz.com> wrote:
Unbelievable!
chief_is_hardly_a_profile_in_courage#.UmhJojK9KSN
Tom Streicher
513.368.XXXX (mobile)”

Yes, this is the same Tom Streicher who recently cost the taxpayers of Hamilton County $50,000 for a 17 page report auditing the Hamilton County Sheriff’s office. He mentioned in the audit that the Sheriff’s IT is stuck in the 1980s. I wonder, does allowing your personal email and personal cell phone number to be forwarded to countless people sound like something a 21st Century IT guru would allow to happen? Of course it could be simply a case of shameless self-advertising, or shameful stupidity. Which ever it is, I hope he has a good spam filter on his email account. In a courtesy to Tom Streicher, I have masked his email address and cell phone number in this article.

I am not judging, I am only reporting the actions of the two former Police Chiefs.
